When Does it Snow in Big Bear?

Big Bear Lake has awesome activities for the whole family year around, but Big Bear’s ski season is the most highly anticipated time of the year.

Generally, you can expect the first snowfall of Big Bear’s snow season as early as October, and at the latest in December. Most commonly though, we can expect to start seeing significant snow fall starting in November.

Big Bear’s last snowfall usually happens in April, although we’ve been known to see some fresh snow arrive as late as May or even June!

But let’s not forget that we are also home to the best snow-making technology in Southern California, with two of the largest snow-making systems on the planet.

Big Bear Mountain Resort has invested nearly $13 million in the past few seasons to advance its snow-making capabilities, which leads to the most reliable snow conditions, and some of the best snow quality each and every day of the skiing and snowboarding season.

Each resort’s snow-making system can convert over 5,000 gallons of water per minute into fresh beautiful snow, and coupled with a nearly inexhaustible supply of water from Big Bear Lake, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain can cover 100% of developed runs with a fresh blanket of man-made snow.

From July to September, Big Bear Lake is generally free of snow, so it is the perfect time to explore the area’s summer activities and escape the surrounding California heat.
